You Can Do It, You Have What It Takes

By Doug Nielsen

Working at a hardware store that specialized in lawn sprinkler systems gave me expert knowledge to design and repair any problem that might come up.  In fact, the professionals would come to me for help in solving their sprinkler repair dilemmas.

I often talked about starting my own sprinkler repair, but was to afraid to follow this dream.

Wade, the owner of the Pipe Bender Sprinkler Company, talked with me several times over a two year period about starting my own sprinkler business.  He said, “Doug you know as much about sprinklers as anyone I know.  Why don’t you give it a go?”  I gave him my usual dismissive, insecure laugh and then focused on helping him with the project that brought him into the store.

One day, while loading some PVC sprinkler pipe onto Wade’s truck in 100 degree temperatures he said, “Doug I am serious.  What is holding you back from starting your own company?”

I told him I was comfortable here at the hardware store, and that it would be frightening to think of venturing out into the “real” world and doing it by “myself”.  He said “That’s no reason; that’s an excuse.”

He looked me squarely in the eyes and said, “Doug you can do this.  You really can.  You have what it takes.  Don’t let fear stop you.”

I can tell you that his words resonated in my soul.  His words continued to cycle through my mind again and again.

Oh how I wished what he said was true, but I doubted it.

This was one of the first times that I can recall someone not only taking personal interest in my future, but like the Wizard of Oz, pointing out that I did have what it takes to follow my dreams.

Wade came into the store one day and said, “I have your first customer.  She is an ornery old lady that I can’t stand.  She’s your first customer and I will even pay you to take her on.”

The rest is history.  I actually did something that seemed impossible!  In fact, I did it for a number of years to help put me through college.

Were you fortunate enough to have a “Wade” in your life?

Whether or not you did, the question remains:  Who needs you to help them fulfill their dream?  Who needs your support and mentorship so they will take that monumental first step?

Not long ago, a therapist doing his college practicum came to my office.  His hands were sweaty; he had the same body language as a homeless dog.  We started talking and it was evident that his life’s desire was to help others but he was petrified with self doubt.

It gave me chills to look him squarely in the eyes and say, “You can do this thing; you have what it takes to make a difference in the lives of your clients.”  He looked up, smiled and said, “You are probably right.”

This Month’s Challenge:

  1. Daily look for someone who needs your support in reaching their dreams.

  2. Consistently remind them that they can do this thing and that they have what it takes.

  3. Follow up with them. Be like the Wizard of Oz who pointed out to our lovely group of friends on the yellow brick road, “You already have what you need to succeed, just decide to use it.”

Remember that I am pulling for you to “Take Life By The Helm” and until next time smooth sailing even in the storms.
