Are you a Selfish Reader?

By Doug Nielsen

No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.--Confucius

Have you heard of Charlie Tremendous Jones? If you have had the privilege of meeting him, you will never forget him. He is known for the statement “The only difference between where you are now, and where you’ll be next year, are the books you read and the people you meet.” He has said this for more than 50 years and has influenced hundreds of thousands of people with it, including me.

Charlie Jones has dedicated his life to learning new things, inspiring new people and giving away thousands of books. Two years ago at a convention, I had the great fortune of meeting him. I introduced myself and stuck out my hand to shake his. He instantly grabbed it and gave me a clinching full body hug (and I do mean full body). He then kissed me on the cheek, looked me directly in the eyes and said what it was an honor to meet me.

He than asked, “Are you a selfish reader?” What does that mean? He explained, “Everything you read is meant to be shared with someone today! If you don’t share it with someone--you are selfish.”

The simple truth of that thought struck me. I had been guilty of being a “selfish reader.” Here are just a couple of benefits to being a “sharing reader?”

  1. When you share what you have learned, you learn and remember it at a much deeper level and are more apt to apply it your self.

  2. You become renewed by helping light the path of another person.

I did not discover my love for reading until I was in my early 20s. At that time, I developed a passion for reading inspirational books by authors such as Viktor Frankl, Norman Vincent Peale, and Steven Covey. Without a doubt these books propelled me to live my dreams! Books can do the same for you.

Are you reading everyday? If you are feeling tired, overwhelmed, uninspired, or apathetic—READ. Reading is the “gas station” for the soul. Reading will refuel your mind with the energy of thought.

Doug’s Helm Challenge for the Month:

  1. Read something that inspires you everyday. (30 minutes if possible)

  2. Take notice what moves you.
  3. Share it with someone today.

Until next time, remember that I am pulling for you to “Take Life by the Helm” and put a smile on the face of one whose head hangs low!

Until next time—God bless and smooth sailing!
