“No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find
time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.” Confucius
What he said hit me like a ton of bricks. I was talking to a very successful coaching
client of mine. He owns 27 different
companies that are thriving during tough times. As his coach, I’m supposed to guide him to greater productivity,
but on this day, the tables turned. He
reminded me of some- thing I know well, something I have preached for years, but something
I was not doing. I confess, sometimes, I
am a hypocrite.
He told me that his habit of daily reading continues to
transform his life. He makes it a daily
ritual to read from the best business, leadership and motivational books. In fact he reads 2-3 books a week. Yikes. I had been
listening to audio books every day, but listening does not provide the benefits
of good old fashion reading.
There is something about the act of assimilating information
through reading that helps amp up the brain. Studies show the benefits of reading in
fighting depression, in combating dementia, in improving mental, social, and
When it comes to mental
stimulation derived from reading,
are either green and growing or ripe and rotting!
Another way of putting it is, stagnation as a leader,
parent, or human has one common denominator …a lack of growth and learning that
comes from daily reading good books.
When we are not reading, we start to fall behind. Why? Because we are not learning and growing and stimulating the mind, body
and spirit. People who are moving ahead
make better choices. People who make
better choices have better info. Where do they get better info? Reading!
Often in our crazy busy world we feel sluggish, stuck or
even feel that we are losing our mind.
Why? Because, we are not fueling
our mind through reading and not growing it by applying our learning. Like a muscle our mind must be pushed to be
So last night as I was winding down from an extremely busy
day, I grabbed a book and started reading. I have re-committed. How about you? P.S. It felt amazing!!! You
